I've had similar problems with an HP machine. You could
try the "System restore" (Press F10 a few times as the
machine is booting), but it can be a bit destructive. If
you have access to an XP CD, try booting from it and using
the recovery console -- run "CHKDSK" (?) and 99 times out
of 100 you'll be back to normal...
