To begin with 256MB of RAM is insufficient for any XP
install in todays environment. My suggestion is 512MB of
RAM with a virtual memory starting at 50MB and topping out
at 1500MB. This will cover just about everything you could
want. I also suggest a video card with a minimum of 64MB.
Don't get all hung up on the pagefile settings XP creates
and then deletes this as needed so it is just as good to
allow it to be "system managed". Good luck.

Totally false. It sepends on what apps you run, but many people
do just fine with 256MB.

This is *not* a one-size-fits-all situation. Some people need
512MB for good performance, others do just fine with 256-384MB,
still others (for example those editing large photographic
images) see substantial performance improvement by going way
above 512MB.
