View Full Version : Uninstalling Windows XP fonts

I have 645 fonts installed in my Windows XP. How they got there is
beyond me. Since my computer takes a really long time to boot up, I
wonder if so many fonts are part of the problem.
What is the procedure for uninstalling the fonts? Will simply deleting
them in the font list in Control Panel be enough? Are some of them
needed by the system and shouldn't be touched?
Appreciate any help. Thanks.

This is a challenging question.
The fonts may have been installed from a variety of applications.
The first solution I would offer, based on experience is to find those
software CDs and uninstall the fonts using the utilities provided by the
software applications themselves. (Consult Help section for each
application).
And yes, too many fonts, slow the computer as they load ready for use by any
application.
It was a painful procedure for me, I uninstalled all of them, using a single
WordPerfect CD, which had more than 800-900 fonts on it. It was able to
identify them all and either remove/or add whatever i picked.

Thanks. Since I use both WordPerfect and Word and have two versions of WP plus
other word processing programs on the HD, many probably came from them. I
guess instructions are in the CD help file. Seems like there ought to be a
program to search and destroy!
Thanks again.

I suggest keeping only necessary fonts.
I mean unless you design stuff, fonts are used for writing, so Arial, Times
New Roman and Tahoma, some of the most popular ones should be enough to get
the writing done.
XP itself has many more than necessary fonts that ought to get the job done.
I did this a while ago on my desktop PC (where all testing happens) and the
CD software has a specific Utility for installing and unistalling fonts. And
if I am not mistaken both apps (Ms, WP) should do this.

Almost certainly they got there as part of the installation(s) of
one or more programs you installed.

No it isn't.
