I appreciate the tip, but how do I log on as the
administrator? He has a HP computer and the first screen
it goes to is the window asking for the password.

Is there a set password for it to know I am the
administrator?

thanks.

If he has XP Home, boot to Safe Mode. Use Administrator for the user name.
Leave password blank. Once logged on, use Control Panel> User Accounts to
change his password.

If XP Pro, press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice at the Welcome Screen and then log on
same as above. Hopefully he never got to this logon before and the password
for this account is still blank.

Not the most secure arrangement but convenient for this situation.

I think its a BIOS password Sharon, at least thats my impression. Bill do
you actually see a Windows splash screen or is it a black screen that comes
up right after your RAM count is done?

I think you are stating that the logon screen appears prepopulated with his
name and is then waiting for a password, correct?
If so, you can just remove his name in the user name box and type
"Administrator" (without the quotes) and assuming he has not set an
administrator password you can just leave the password box blank. This
should allow you to log on as administrator at which point you can change
his user password.
