Using Win/XP SP1 - Windows Explorer rarely works. As
soon as I enter Explorer, it aborts...immediately flashes
to display the wallpaper only, then repaints the desktop
icons. No log or error report generated, etc. I've
tried all the ways I know of to enter Explorer and every
result is the same (but every once in a while it works
long enough to do 1 operation - like expand the 'C'
drive).

On the other hand, no problem seeing files and
directories when using the 'Open' option of programs like
Word, Excel, etc.

Any ideas?

Hi Keith,

Check the system files, start/run sfc scannow (you may need to insert =
your WinXP CD for this) and allow it to scan the system.

Tried the sfc /scannow ... didn't report or change
anything, didn't affect the problem one way or the other.

Thaks for the tip, though ... any other ideas?

Hi Keith,

Figures the easy way wouldn't work. Ok, some questions:

1) How long has this been happening?
2) Did you recently update/upgrade/update anything prior to this =
happening?
3) Does it happen with *any* other windows?
4) Considered uninstalling any recently install WindowsUpdates?

Rick,

I just updated my laptop to XP 1 week ago. It was fine
for a few days, but as I proceeded - it happened. Wish I
could tell you exactly what I had loaded that caused it.
All I know is I was loading MS-Office, Quicken,
QuickBooks, TurboTax, Norton Systemworks, and a few other
things...and I allowed the patches that the OS found for
itself to be added (I originally loaded SP1, so it was
just security patches). Somewhere in there, it started -
and I'm not thrilled to have to start over.

1 other thing - I can got 'Start', 'Run', 'C:' and
everything works fine. Can expand and contract
directories, move to other devices (A:, D:, E:), copy
files, delete files....whatever. It just freaks if I
attempt to use Explorer.

Don't know if this helps...anything to avoid starting
over.

Hi Keith,

Ok, to avoid "starting over" we should work backwards. What I mean is to =
begin uninstalling (not disabling) one app at a time until the behavior =
stops. If we get to the point where all apps are installed and the =
problem is still not reolved, then we can rerun the sfc step we started =
with.

If that doesn't help, at this point We can do a repair install (will =
provide instructions if needed), which will preserve the system state =
(no starting over), but remove the WindowsUpdates - which could also be =
the source of the problem, there are a lot of them, and a few had bugs =
(now resolved, but you may have gotten a buggy one).

Please report back with your progress.
