windows locks up durring startup

whenever i go to up win xp pro with sp1, my system hangs.
when i try to start into safe mode, the computer always
stops on the file "mup.sys". Does anyone know how to fix
this problem without reloading the entire operating system?

Joe, try removing your PCI cards one by one to see if it corrects the
