I recently upgraded from Me to XP Pro and somehow my NAV
pro is not functioning correctly. Norton says I should
delete window temp files, clean boot and reinstall Nav
pro. I am afraid to delete temp files because there are so
many. How do I copy them or to what? Also at one point I
clicked on the Norton NAV pro recycle bin and an unerase
wizard appeared telling me that 1575 files were protected
and advising me to highlight any I want to recover. did
not know what that meant;whether things were lost, held or
what. Any advice to guide me through this process would be
appreciated

Hi, B.

This kind of problem is one of the many reasons why users who "upgrade" from
Win9x/ME to WinXP so often end up having to start over and do a clean
install later, anyhow. Much of WinME can be successfully migrated to WinXP,
but the two versions of Windows have such fundamental differences that all
device drivers and some programs - especially utilities - just have to be
installed fresh on the new platform.

It's been years since I retired Win98, but, as I recall, Symantec stated
clearly and strongly that their products should be uninstalled from Win98
before the upgrade. After the upgrade, the WinXP version of their programs
should be installed from scratch.

At this stage, you probably should backup all your data, then boot from the
WinXP CD-ROM and do a clean install of WinXP. Unless you plan to use
Win9x/ME on this computer in the future, you should allow WinXP Setup to
reformat your HD to NTFS in the process. Then install the WinXP versions of
NAV and your other utilities and applications. Finally, restore your data.

If you don't do a full clean install, then just follow Norton's
instructions: delete all those temp files and uninstall NAV completely.
Then reinstall it, making sure that you have the WinXP version. Most
likely, all the files in your recycle bins are unnecessarily taking up
space; either they are garbage, or they are perfectly good files that have
been superceded or have lost connections to whatever programs could use
them, and a reinstall will put usable new copies onto your HD to replace
them.
