Have Microsoft IntelliMouse explorer. Have just changed
computer which was on Win.95 then Win 98. The red light
on the mouse used to switch off when the computer was
shut down. Have installed the mouse into my new computer
which runs on XP but does not now switch off. The Rom did
not initially work so downloaded updated software from
Microsoft.

Can anyone help. Dont like having the light on
Intellimouse all the time.

Thanks

On many motherboards the PS/2 port remains powered even when you shut the
computer down. This is by design, and the only thing you can do (that I am
aware of) is turn off the main power switch on the back, or plug the mouse
into a USB port instead of the PS/2 port.

Actually....

USB ports accept power on (or wake) events. If your motherboard USB wakeup,
your mouse will still light up even if you plug it into the USB port (as the
USB port still emit power in order to accept a wake up event).

To sum things up, as long as the mouse receives power, the light will be on
..

If you want to cut off power to the mouse while the computer is in an Off
state, you'll need to disable these power on by mouse or power on by USB
options. For some motherboards you'll also have to change some jumpers to
completely cut off the flow of electricity to the ports.
