Came home tonight and my wife has managed to double the
depth of my task bar, problem is when I resize it with
the mouse it will not shrink back to its original size. I
have tried everything I can think of so I need some out
of the box suggestions please

Right click on the Task Bar, ensure "Lock Task Bar" is not checked,
move/resize the taskbar to the size of your choice.

Make sure your taskbar is unlocked (right click on taskbar, uncheck "Lock
the Taskbar.")
Then move to the top line on the top of the bar until your cursor turns into
a double arrow, then drag it back down.

If you can't resize it, then look on the bottom level for an icon or, more
than likely, a separator line.
You'll have to resize things on the top level so that there is nothing left
on the second level.
It's strictly a matter of trial and error, there's no secret to doing it and
it can be frustrating.

Make your quicklaunch smaller, or any other toolbars you might have, such as
an address bar.
Once you have everything, including any separator lines back on the top
level, you'll be able to drag back to one level using the above
instructions.
