Windows XP fax

Somewhere along the line my fax stopped working. It is still in the printers
folder "ready" When I try to fax I get an error message "fax printer cannot
be accessed make sure it is set up properly". When I try to access fax
properties I get a message "The Microsoft Shared Fax Driver printer driver
is not installed on this computer, Do you want to install it now?" If I
click on yes, it sends me to the printer driver install wizard, but there is
no fax driver listed. I have already tried to reinstall the windows fax
component through add or remove programs, it goes through the motions but
does not change anything. I have also tried deleting fax from the printers
folder, but when I click on install local fax, nothing happens. I have
searched the microsoft site for an answer, but I can't find one. When
comparing files with another computer running XP, they all seem to be there,
fax still works fine on the other computer. I am running an HP Pavillion
763c. Any help would be appreciated.

You have no idea what lead up to this problem? What does Event Viewer say?
