DVD Rom and CD RW Disappearing Act

Someone Please Help. I'm having trouble with my DVD Rom,
and my CD RW Disappearing. Sometimes XP will read it
other times it won't. For instance it will read after
coming out of standby, then I will but a CD in either the
burner, or the DVD Rom, and when I take it out it will be
gone from "my computer" and XP will no longer recognize
that I have them, until I go into standby again.
I have taken it to a local shop, and they told me to but
XP Pro in (I had XP Home), but it still does not
recognize it.
What can I do?

The Shop was wrong, it will make NO difference whether its Pro or
Home. Its either a driver or CD Burner problem.

What CD Burner software do you have installed?
Adaptec Easy CD 4 causes lots of problems - see www.roxio.com to see
how to remove it and any registry entries.
If using Easy CD5 or later make sure you have latest patches!
