Can files be transferred with this wizard through a USB
cable, or must a serial cable be used? I would like to
have my old PC placed next to my new PC and just use the
old PC for an internet connection and to download files,
and then transfer files to my new PC.

Files & Setting Transfer Wizard is designed to transfer files and settings
from an older computer's OS to a newer computer's OS. I don't believe it
can be used as a "network" as you describe " for an internet connection and
to download files, and then transfer files to my new PC"

You can purchase a special USB cable which will allow you to connect the two
computers in a network fashion. Search the web for USB networks. BTW,
Belkin does produce a USB to Ethernet adaptor that provides up to 100 mbps
transfer speed and doesn't cost too much. Two of those and a "crossover"
Cat 5 Ethernet cable would be another way to go.

So if I used USB-to-Ethernet adapters, could I use an
ethernet cable to directly connect the two PC's, or would
I also need some sort of network switch or router in the
middle? And would I need special software to make this
run?

Thanks,
Frank

No to the switch or router if you purchase an Ethernet crossover cable.
(This is a special cable that has wires connected to the ends differently
than a standard Ethernet cable.)

The networking software that comes with all versions of Windows will connect
together using TCP/IP protocol. Not knowing what version of Windows you
have on the "old" computer I can't tell you how to set that one up to talk
to the new one (XP) but the new one has a network connection wizard to help
connect to the old one.

Thanks for your help. After talking with a Belkin rep, it
seems like the easiest thing to do is get a USB direct
connect device. It's on this web page -
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?
Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=20963

This would allow me to go directly from one USB port to
another on my PC's (one is Windows 98 and the new one will
be XP). I wouldn't have to use any extra adapters that
way.

Thanks again for your time...
