I have a customer that brought in his computer and it
needs to be reloaded. The problem is he brought in his
windows xp home cd but he cant find his certificate of
authenticity number. I know it is a legal copy because he
just bought the pc from us and we set it up for him. Also
i have already tried pulling the number off his pc but it
to far damaged I can't access anything on his pc. I have
searched the microsoft website but i cant find any phone
number that doesn't require a $35.00 fee. If anyone could
tell me how to get ahold of microsoft about this matter I
would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Phil Martis

Greetings --
If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:
How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the PC's manufacturer
or the vendor who sold him the OS; although very few
manufacturers/vendors keep records of the Product Keys they've sold,
it's worth a try before you have to buy a new license.

Bruce --
If you re-read the original post, he sold the customer this computer, and he
installed XP for the customer, so that probably makes him the OEM. It's a
ticklish situation. If he tells the customer he's an idiot for losing the
number, he loses the customer. Or he bites the bullet and buys the customer
a new copy of XP.
Of course, the sticker should be on the computer...

He has the CD but not the jewel case with the yellow
sticker? The COA is a hologram on foil and is not the
product key number. The product key is 25 letters and
numbers (5 groups of 5).

Greetings --
That's the Product ID, which isn't the same as a Product Key.
