View Full Version : Need Help Setting Up RAID0
Mad Amoeba
December 5th 03, 01:20 AM
have p4pe motherboard with pentium 2.4. Have 2 HD: 60 Gb maxtor and 80 gb
WD.
I want to make them into RAID 0. As far as i understand I should use a
regular parallel cable.
plug one end into the RAID connector on the motherboard. Plug other two
plugs into corresponding
harddrives and that's it. One of the harddrives is set to master and another
to slave. I'm running win2k.
When I connect the 2 drives in the maner described above I get 'not
bootable disk found' error. 'Please insert bootable disk'.
there are also several notes on the raid feature in the manual:
------------
Important notes on the RAID feature:
By default the drive that you connect to the PRI-RAID1 connector follow the
ARA133/100/66/33 protocol as an independent drive not as a disk array.
The PRI_RAID1 connector supports only one HDD set to MASTER mode. An HDD
set to Slave mode does not work.
For RAID0 configuration you may use any 2 of the parallel ATA and SATA
connectors or all the 3 connectors
FOR RAID1 configuration you may use any 2 of the Parallel ATA and SATA
connectors.
THE RAID/SATA controller chipset does not support ARAPI devices such as
CDROMS and DVD ROMS etc.
---------------
So my question is : What order should I do things to get things working.
First setup windows 2000 on one of the disks convert it to dynamic. Convert
second disk to dynamic as well, then hook them up to the raid controller on
the motherboard and run it. Right?
tHanx a million for all the reponses.

The only way I've ever done it is to set up the two drives, then install the
OS on the raid configuration, so it sees both drives as one.

Hi, Currie, thanx for replying.
So you first connected 2(empty) drives to the controller on the motherboard
with a parallel cable then,
started up the computer with a w2k cdrom in the drive and installed in a
regular manner. right?
Did you setup one of the drives to be master and another as slave or no
jumpers on either?
Did you need to partition them or convert them to dynamic drives or anything
else?
Thanx again for replying.

I believe it was master and slave, but it's been a while.

With mine, there was a raid configuration utility that I ran before I
installed, and from there I chose the type of raid, etc. Then when I
installed the OS, it just saw it as a normal drive.
Sometimes you need to run a driver utility after you start the setup so the
OS sees the drive. Depends on how your raid works.

In order to run any RAID configuration, all drives must be the same size.
You can't just toss a 60GB and 80GB drive together, but two 60s or two 80s.

Not true. I have successfully set up a raid0 with a Raptor 37 gig HD and a
Maxtor 120 gig HD. WinXP only recognized a combined 70 gig HD though.

Make sure you have the setup files for the raid controller on a floppy.
Press f6 during the boot process with the Winxp CD.

yep, my mobo's manual says that I CAN combine 2 different drives but the
performance won't be optimal.
I have windows 2000 and my mobo's manual isn't too clear on what I should do
exactly.
Here what it says:
-----------
The PDC20376 chipset supports Ultra ATA hard disk drives. For optimum
performance install identical drives
of the same model and capacity when creating a disk array. If you are
creting RAID 0 array for performace,
use 2 new drives.
<<What do they mean by 'new'
The chipset supports RAID 0 for master drives only.
Follow these steps to install the hard disks for RAID configuration
1.Set jumpers on each hd as master. Install the hard disks into the drive
bays
Connect HDD cables. Three connections options are available for creating a
RAID 0 array:
a. Connect one parallel ATA HDD to RAID connector and one SATA HDD to either
one
of the two serial ATA connectors using separate parallel or serial ATA
cables.
b. Connect one SATA HDD to each SATA connector using separate serial ATA
cables,
c. Connect one SATA HDD to the RAID connector and one SATA HDD to either one
of the two serial ATA connectors using separate parallel/serial ATA
cables.
<<On this part I'm not clear at all. I have two parallel hard drives, so are
the instructions above telling me that I can't
<<use 2 parallel drives in the RAID 0 at the same time?. I set jumpers on
both of them to master. Plug one end of the
<< cable into the RAID connector on the motherboard, middle connector into
the 60Gb
<<drive and first connector into the 80Gb drive. Is this the correct setup
or am I missing something?
Boot system and in the BIOS changes 'onboard SATA/IDE RAID Controller' to
enabled and 'onboard ARA device First ' to 'yes'
<<I changed these settings
At this point manual tells me that when I boot up MBFastBuild utility will
detect my drives. However when both of the
drives are plugged in, the system only detect one. So for example if I
unplug the 60gb drive the system successfully
detects the 80GB drive and when I unplug the 80GB drive the system
successfully detects the 60GB drive. However,
when both of them plugged in the system consistenly detects only the 80GB
drive on the RAID controller.

There you go. Set both as master.
Install the hard disks into the drive

That's what it looks like. Time to invest in a serial drive, I guess.
I set jumpers on

yup. You can't have two parallel drives. You have 1 raid connection that
will take one drive, and two serial connections that take one drive each.
Which makes sense. You want each drive to be on its own. Odd that they
didn't give you another raid connection, but they gave you serial and you've
probably also got standard IDE for CD drives, right?

The controller can only handle one drive, apparently. Which makes sense from
a performance point of view.

chekc in your BIOS - you should have an area to set the raid to RAID0.

Does the motherboard have a RAID controller chip?
The one's I've used always had two additional IDE connectors on the board -
and you used each one with a separate cable to the two hard disks, both set
up as Master disks.

What about the following:
Since I have only one RAID controller and 2 parallel HDs what if I
1. Connect one HD to the RAID controller and
2. Connect second HD to the regular IDE connector with another parallel
cable.
Will I be able to do RAID somehow with software perhaps at this point?
Both of my CDRWs will be running on another available IDE connector so that
HD
can be all by itself on the avialable IDE connector.
Is this possible.?
