View Full Version : Five button mouse

gERONIMO
May 3rd 04, 01:45 PM
Hi all,

I recently purchased a five button mouse and didn't install the software that came with it (i find this quite usless). Yet, my buttons act "programmed" when clicked, in IE for example (back and forward), Explorer (same thing) etc...

WHERE is this programmed? Registry? If so - what should I do to change the functions (i.e. to change this to esc & shift)?

Thanks!

Why change anything if you find the other buttons useless.. you could try
loading the software..

It's in the drivers for the mouse. Even if you didn't install any drivers,
the system will do so on its own if it has such drivers. Conversely, if the
system installed generic drivers, you might need to install the drivers that
came with the mouse (Probably should check mouse manufacturer's website for
the latest versions as you have no idea how long the mouse was on the shelf
before purchase).

In any event, the drivers control the function.

First - thanks for the quick response.

Yes, your presumption was right - they are generic drivers and as such,
there are no options to modify this settings anywhere (in GUI settings). I
tried in "Hardware devices" and mouse setting via CP.

Now here is a million $ question for me: How can I disable/change this
option in generic drivers since it is quite annoying? And please don't tell
me to buy another mouse ;-)

Tx!

I really don't whant to be a PITA here but - why shouldn't I be able to
change or disabe this option?

The design of the mouse was made in such manner that clickng can happen
accidentally. But that is beyond the point :-) By default I don't load
unthrusty software - I'm not a programmer and have no clue what it is doing
to my resources.

What can I say - just a plaind, old paranoic :-)))

G'Day gERONIMO,

You're not much of an aVENGER, are you?

When X-Windows was originally written, the
standard Mouse was defined as a 5-button mouse -
you should also consider that the standard colours
(that means 'colors' ) were based on Crayola (just
some more useless information)!

Since 'Bill' has stated that Windows Terminal Services
may become X-Compatible in the future, it is probably
a happy accident that the buttons do anything meaningful.

I suggest you migrate (I'll pay the fare if you can find a
sinking ship!) to Unix/X-Windows where you will
probably find they are still just as useless.

Oh! By the Way - whether you want to be or not - you
ARE a PITA!!!!
