Here is what I have: 2 CD ROMs, 1 3.5 floppy, 2 hard drives.
Running Win XP Pro
I used Partition Commander 8 to partition my larger hard drive.
Now my second hard drive is gone from my directory tree, the
partition is there but no second hard drive.
I read somewhere that some systems cannot support more than
4 IDE devices.
Does this hold true? Are you limited to the # or partitions or is
there a work a round or do I need to do something else?

Thanks!

You are limited to eight IDE devices.

A partition doesn't count as a "device", but DOS would only handle 4
"primary" partitions on a disk. You could have mutiple disks, with up to 4
primary partitions. Extended and logical partitions are handled
differently, and the limits on "logical" partitions are much higher.

You may just need to right click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management and
re-assign the drive letter to the 'missing' drive.
