View Full Version : 'A' Floppy Drive

May 4th 04, 01:08 AM
I installed Windows XP Home Edition yesterday. It
appears Windows XP will not interface with my 'A' drive
properly. Have tried several times to enable 'A'in the
BIOS mode without success. I see other problems like
this in the newsgroups area. What is the solution?

The inability for your A drive to be recognized by your BIOS has nothing at
all to do with your Windows XP operating system. What exactly did you do in
the BIOS? Does the early part of the boot-up, before Windows appears, list
anything about the A or B drive?

When viewing the device manager, two floppy drives appear
with yellow circles with exclamation marks. Attempted to
delete one, then go into BIOS to assure the one left was
active. Then without booting up again, there would be an
active a drive icon to click on. Then after a restart
the a drive icon is gone again. Putting a floppy in the
a drive and going into dos mode, I was able to list the
directory on the floppy. So, that tells me the a drive
works, but I am unable to activate the XP to provide a
path to it.

Thanks for your help.

I don't understand what you mean by "I am unable to activate the XP to
provide a path to it". Are you saying that your OS is not yet activated?

Anyway, power up your computer, go into your BIOS (usually by hitting the
DEL key very early in the boot, assign your A drive as 1.44mb, 3.5 inch
(assuming that is what it is), save this change to your BIOS and exit the
BIOS. After getting into Windows, go into the Device Manager and REMOVE all
occurrences of floppy drives, click on OK, exit D.M., and reboot. Hopefully
the A drive will then be automatically recognized by XP.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Make sure you have connected the ribbon cable correctly.
