When installing windows xp on a hard drive, which file system do I want?
FAT 32 or NTFS? Advantages vs. Disadvantages?

Hi Gene,
This may help you decide:

Personally, I would go with NTFS unless you are dual booting with a =
Win9x partition and want to have shared access to any one particular =
drive.

NTFS - more secure and less prone to corruption and better for larger
HD's. - down side - recovery if your cna not boot up as dos does not read
NTFS - but i know u can get dos apps that will read ntfs.

I would go with NTFS unless you need access from a Win9x machine. Its more
secure and offers larger the ability to see larger drives as one volume.

Greetings --
Why ".... unless you need access from a Win9x machine... ?"
The file systems on the various computers communicating over a
network are completely irrelevant, as none of the individual
computers' operating systems ever directly access the other computers'
hard drives. Instead, a computer sends a "request," if you will, for
the desired data, and the operating system of the host ("receiving")
computer accesses its own hard drive (whose file system it obviously
can read) and then sends that data back to the requesting computer as
neutral packets of information that are completely independent of the
file systems on the respective computers. After all, don't you use a
Windows-based PC (whether it's FAT32 or NTFS) to access data stored on
the Internet's mostly Unix servers, which use a completely different
file system?

I wasnt trying to imply that at all, I meant if he planned on having 9x on a
partition on THIS drive and 2k/XP/2k3 on another partition on THIS drive
that he would have issues getting data from the NTFS volume on THIS drive in
Windows 9x. Sorry that wasnt clearer to everyone.

Not that its worth feeding the trolls at this point but, the original post
was:
When installing windows xp on a hard drive, which file system do I want?
FAT 32 or NTFS? Advantages vs. Disadvantages?
A disadvantage of NTFS is that it cannot be accessed locally by a FAT32
volume when booted into that volume. That was the point I was trying to
make albeit in a somewhat confusing manner.
As for the MCSE comment, I dont think that warrants a response. Have a good
weekend.

Bwahahahahahaha, of course it was, but you digressed from that with this =

Bwahahahahahahahaha; you've been caught! Your techno-crap remark above =
has absolutely nothing to do with machines separate from another having =
the ability to see data on their drives through a network, which you =
suggest above.
