How can I get the hotfix to reset the DMA mode for my
hard drive channels after 6 errors with the hard disk
controller? I have two hard disks that are UDMA5 capable
but the controller will only ever run in PIO mode under
XP. It originally did work in DMA mode but I have read
that there is a feature/bug in XP that steps the mode
down with successive read errors from the hard disk until
it eventually ends up in PIO ode with no way of resetting
it without this hotfix that Microsoft decides that you
need.

I know of no "hotfix" for this feature. The usual method for correcting is
to delete the effected controler from device manager and reboot. Windows
will redetect and give you the proper DMA mode.

However, the reason it is a feature is that if your hardware has a problem
and XP detects data errors you will minimize corruption. The real fix may
be to find out why there are data errors occuring!

FWIW,
