My new computer came partitioned with a C and D drive, C
being the smaller and main drive, using Windows XP, how
do I assign downloads such as games, music, pictures etc.
to the D drive so I don't use so much space on the C
drive.

Use Tweakui to move MY DOCUMENTS to D:, also move store
folder for Outlook Express to D:, make a Download folder on
D: (make subfolders for different types or vendors)
When you do a "save target as" you have a drop down list and
can point to the desired folder.
