if you look at the postings for the last 4 or 5 days you will see quite a
lot of traffic on this very subject.

John, it sounds like you need a firewall to keep out unwanted intrusions.
Click the following address for a free firewall from ZoneAlarm.
This is a self extracting file you activate by using the Start, Run line,
typing the path to where you downloaded the file.
Good Luck,
Jerry

Greetings --
This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

Actually the in-built firewall in XP is pretty good - try testing it on some
of the third-party test sites, I think you'll be quite surprised.( As an
afterthiught, is that only in Pro though?)

XP firewall is available in either Home or Pro and is not ON
by default in either.
It only blocks incoming, which is most important. Zone
Alarm will block incoming and out-going traffic and alerts
to changed programs.

XP's firewall and ZoneAlarm work well together, turn them both on.

Why? If you're running Zone Alarm, it does everything that the
built-in firewall does, and more. There's no advantage to also
having XP's firewall on.
