java virtual machine launcher

when i start up my machine i get a message box headed
java virtual machine launcher, carrying the message:
could not find the main class. program will exit.

i have downloaded the latest version of java from the sun
microsystems website yet whenever i go into yahoo chat
all i get on the chat screen is a message saying unable
to load applet. you may need to download an updated
version of the microsoft vm.

any help would be appreciated.
