is it possible to add a direct link to windows update to the internet
explorer desktop icon when i right click on it? It already has "Open
Home Page" and I was wondering if "Windows Updates" can also be added
?

Under IE you already have Tools, Windows Update
This is a predefined non-editable link to Windows Update.
I suggest this as a better alternative than changing your Home Page.

You could also always right-click the desktop and create a direct
shortcut to the Windows Update site. Depending on your OS version,
you can also automaticly add updates through Group Policy.

I don't believe the OP was looking to change the Home Page, but rather
include an option in the list similar to the "Open Home Page" link found by
right-clicking IE. The way I understand it, or at least the way I picture
it, it would be like "Open Home Page \n Windows Update \n <sep> Create
Shortcut etc."

The direct shortcut would be a good alternative though, and would not
involve registry hacks or anything of the sort, so might be a better option.

There is (or should be) a shortcut already as a Menu item in All
Programs - Windows update. You can copy that off to desktop or
QuickLaunch bar if you want. Or r-click it, take its Properties and set
a shortcut key (hotkey) to it
