Your prob is very unusual, i have a SB Live! 5.1 Digital and it works fine
under XP.
You don't have any onboard sound or other hardware that might be conflicting
under Device Manager?
It might even be a motherboard BIOS issue, in which case you would want to
try a update from the web.

It's not that unusual. I have the same problem and it worked before I had
to reinstall XP. What's unusual is there is no mention of it anywhere on
MS' site.

For the SBLive 5.1 the drivers must be installed. A CD should
be there for the card.

An easier plan if it works, just move it to another PCI slot. I had one,
detected, but no sound, moved it to another PCI slot, then it worked.
