View Full Version : USB Driver and Digital Camera

I am using a brand new Gateway computer with XP pro
loaded. I attempted to attach my plug-and-play Sony
Cybershot digital camera to retreive some photos.

When plugged in to the USB port and turned on, XP finds
the hardware, calls it "Sony Sony USB" (sic), and loads
the driver. All of this is fine, but it never loads the
device as a removable hard drive or anything else that
can be viewed in any hardware, software, my computer, or
other window.

I have deleted the drivers, tried to load alternate
drivers (it won't let you select from a list), and
deleted the USB ports in Device Manager. No luck.

I have been writing the Sony people, but since Windows
won't bring the unit up as a device/drive of any kind,
their help is of no value.

Why would XP load a driver for a device, but not the
device itself? I have a laptop running XP Home, and I
have zero problems with that unit. When I do the same
steps to plug it in and turn it on, I get the WIA
interface and can easily proceed from there.

Is something different in XP Pro?

Please help.

See the prior thread "USB Mass Storage Device is unreadable, please
help". I have no idea if this procedure will help with your problem,
but it seems worth a try.
