This might be a dumb question, but if I have a DVD-ROM,
can I burn DVD's?

A DVD-ROM will only read and play DVDs. To burn DVDs, you'll need
to install a DVD Writer.

Nicholas,
If I purchased the computer through Dell do you know how I
would go about upgrading to a DVD Writer? Are they
expensive?
Thanks.

DVD Writers run around $200. Make sure you get one with the black
facing if your Dell computer is black. This site offers good prices:

You also need to realise that not all DVD-burners are created equal - there
are three types, those that burn to DVD-R/RW only, those that will burn to
DVD+R/RW only and those that will burn to both types of media. I would
recommend the latter, but they're a lot more expensive (I have a Sony
DRU-510A which is one that will write to both), otherwise I'd go for a
DVD-R/RW drive as it's by far the most common format at the moment, and
probably will be for a while yet. 95% of set-top DVD players can only read
DVD-, as can most DVD-ROM drives, so if you wish to share things with your
family/friends then I would say that DVD- is the only way to go (unless, of
course you can spring the extra $50 or so for multi-media burner (that's one
that writes to all types)).

All burners, whether + or -, can write to CD-R/RW.
