View Full Version : installing "Red Hat" or ( other ) Linux after the fact

the reason I am posting this to Windows XP Usenet is the fact that I have
Windows XP Home Edition already installed.
Is it possible to install Red Hat or some other version of Linux on the SAME
partition as Windows XP AFTER the fact (after Windows XP is already
installed) ? I don't have the money / resources otherwise....
{ this is for a class project }

Yes, this is possible. It is called "Dual-Booting". Here is a link for more info:

I wasn't aware that dual booting would allow Linux to be installed on the
***SAME*** partition?????

Not on the same partition. You have three basic options
(1) Ask friends and relatives if they have an old hard drive lying around
(you know -- 1.6 Gig, 3 GI, 6 Gig, something that they have outgrown) that
you can have or borrow. Put that drive into your computer for a Linux
drive.
(2) Blow XP away and start over (losing all your data). Put your Windows
XP CD into your computer, boot from it. Partition your drive, format one
partitoin and install XP fresh on that partition. Install Linux on the
other partition.
(3) Buy third-party software to create a partition out of free space on
your existing "C" drive.

The short answer is no this can't be done the way you are proposing.
