there's not that many....you only NEED to download the critical updates, the
others you can take or leave as you prefer......

I did the "live" update.. download 1.9M installer, which then analyzes your
system to see what's needed, then downloads and installs only what you need
(from their list of "critical" security etc. updates). Ended up downloading
50M via modem as I slept (I think there's a max of 30M, so it must have
bugged out on the first attempt, then started over), and had installed them
all by the time I woke up. Rebooted, prayed, and everything worked fine.

Haven't really noticed any change, slow down, etc. yet. Been busy "Send To"
ing files and entire directories to my CDRW. This is an awesome
implementation of Roxio's CD burning utility without having to get into the
complexities of that program.

RoadRunner is doing a special--$9.95/mo for first three months, and since
I'm already wired, think I'll take advantage (ends today) so I can grab
large downloads quicker. Once in a while, I'll put up with a 20-30M modem
download overnight. But when service packs get up into the 60M and larger
size, broadband is the only way to go. I downloaded a 300+MB developer's kit
for WinCE a few years back when I had Road Runner before at $19.95/mo as a
faculty member at U.C., but when AOL bought them, they jacked our rates to
$44.99/mo. and I dropped them. The school cut its contract within the
year... now they only offer us discounts with ADSL which is 1/5 the speed of
cable in Cincinnati. And it's still overpriced.

Sheeesh! I don't think I've EVER dowloaded updates in that quantity!

After 811xxx fiasco, I turned Auto-updtde OFF and now check
1/month via Calender pgm when I can devote an hour or so to
just that. I check WUpdate NG 4 complaints 2.

Since beginning this routine, it took 2hrs to look at 16
updates & install 50% as follows:
Considered Installed
Critical 6 4 some were 4 servers
Recommended 9 3
Drivers 1 1

In the past, 2nd highest cause of my PC crashing was MS so I
feel this minimizes my exposure. Note that by far the
highest cause of my PC crashing was my own STUPIDITY !

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

I think the absurdity of even having to download this large a "patch" or
"fix" reflects poorly on Microsoft's pattern of bringing products to market
long before they're ready. We have become, in effect, its paying Beta
testers. Look at Windows NT 4: six or is it now SEVEN major service packs...
who has the time for this?

If they were a respectable company, they'd at LEAST send the updates on CDs
to registered users... but they started charging ridiculous amounts for that
"service" long ago.
