After migrating to ACE and WindowsXP, all of my documents
are not "Read Only" and cannot changes cannot be saved by
highlighting the old document and hitting "Save". I get
error message saying the document is a read only document
and I must save to a new name.

Display the documents in My Computer
Highlight those you want to remove read-only status
Go File / Properties
In the General tab, uncheck Read-only
Repeat above for documents in other folders
