View Full Version : Game Controller Software on XP

I am using XP Home, and have installed one of the older
Sidewinder game pads. Its not USB, it uses the other
connector that connects to the joystick/MIDI port on
soundcards, whatever thats called. I am using an Audigy 2
card with the add on joystick port. That is what the game
pad is connected to. The game controllers applet in
control panel is able to install and display the game pad
properly once added. And the controller works fine in most
of my games. But naturally, if I want to assign a
shortcut to one or more keys, as is usually done with the
game controller software, I am unable to do so, because
none of the Sidewinder game controller software setup
programs will work on XP. I tried the one that came with
the pad, in the box, I think its version 2. It said
something about not being designed for the operating
system. I could find no way to work around that. So, I
went to Microsoft's hardware-game controllers-downloads
website and downloaded the latest version of software for
my controller, 3.02 I think. I tried installing it and the
EXE extracts the files, but when it tries to continue with
setup, it says it can't find a setup file, like it
extracted it, but then can't find it. I thought that it
maybe wasn't downloaded completely, so I cleared the
internet cache and tried downloading it again, and got the
same problem.

That I can see, there seems to be no version of this
software on the microsoft website for Windows XP, it just
says for Windows 95 and 98. Where can I get a version of
this software that will install properly in XP? I know I
could probably get a generic game controller program on
the net somewhere that will do the same things that the
microsoft program does, but, I would much rather use
microsoft software with my microsoft hardware.

I hope someone can help.

Thanks,
John

You are correct. The Profiler software for mapping keyboard keys to buttons
was written in a vxd format which isn't supported on NT platforms.
Unfortunatly there are no plans on new software being written for these
devices.
