I have several files and folders throughout my hard drive
that cannot be opened, renamed, copied, moved or
deleted. Error message that file is in use or disk is
full - neither of which is true.

Can any one help?

Reboot into safemode and try in there.

A book called Windows XP Annoyances suggested the
following. First close all running programs and try to
delete. Then try safe mode, then command prompt in safe
mode (del <filename>) then boot to command prompt and use
the del command. Will try these tonght and hope one of
them work.

Thanks to all who replied.

Try renaming the files. Then deleting them. This process seems to work
for me in the cases like yours. I learned it beginning in WinNT4
