Try WD's site, see if you can get the driver off there,
put it to a floppy.
Maybe will work.

i'm sorry, but western digital's website doesn't have a driver for
ide. in fact, all drivers listed at http://support.wdc.com/download/
mention "It is not necessary to download the device drivers for
Windows ME, 2000 & XP."
and, as i said, the already installed hard disks do NOT have a proper
driver for them. i guess there's two possible problems with my system:
either winxp doesnt need a driver at all, and yet, it asks for it. or
either it does need a generic driver, provided in the initial winxp
installation, and that's been deleted somehow.
any other suggestions?

I later noticed that any new hardware fails to install -- or driver
software for that matter, such as Acrobat. I reinstalled WinXP, now
all works, but there should've been a less radical solution.
