View Full Version : My Network Places displayed Shares

I would like to modify my view settings (and/or registry)
in XP Pro so that I do not see all of my Shares
below 'Entire Network' in 'My Network Places'.
FYI - Shares are with a Workgroup using NetBEUI protocol -
only).
I thought this would be easy, but, so far, the answer
eludes me.
Can anyone offer a little help please?
Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

Two options to consider: Disable Recent Shares in Network Places

This restriction stops remote shared folders from being added to Network
Places whenever you open a document in the shared folder. Per User or Per
System

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\
Explorer]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\
Explorer]

Value Name: NoRecentDocsNetHood
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = track shares, 1 = disable tracking)

Second one: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\LanmanServer\
Parameters

Value Name: AutoShareServer, AutoShareWks
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disable shares, 1 = enable)

Create a new DWORD value of either 'AutoShareWks' for NT Workstation or
'AutoShareServer' for NT server. Then set the value to equal '0' to disable
automatic sharing. If the values already exist then modify them to change
the value.

Restart Windows and the automatic shares should not be created.

Kelly ... thank you very much for your help ...=20
Q. - If I were to implement your second option of=20
disabling 'AutoShareWks' or 'AutoShareServer' (BTW - are=20
these NT Workstation / Server reg entries applicable to=20
Win XP Pro?), would I be disabling actual access to=20
shared folders? You see, I still want sharing to occur,=20
I just don't want My Network Places populated with all=20
the recent share names - I prefer to navigate to them as=20
required and keep them from being displayed conspicuously.
Thanks again eh?

Name them with a trailing $ sign. That means hidden.
