On my old windows 98 I had 2 sets of microsoft newsgroups. I do have the
microsoft newsgroup, but I do not have the old "alt.nnn" newsgroups. It had
a name of netnews.msn.com. That name does not work with XP.Does any one know
what name I should be using for newsgroups from Microsoft other than
Microsoft.public.nnn
Thanx

Greetings --
Your ISP will be able to tell you the name/address of their news
server.

Hi, Mark.
Many news servers simply "slurp" messages from other servers, such as the
Microsoft public news server, and relay messages back and forth. This often
results in posts that are delayed, out of sequence, or missing altogether.
Since the MS public server is free and does not require you to log on, you
should get the best results by subscribing directly to any of the 2000+ MS
public NGs on their native server.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics
That should bring you right back here, but connected directly to the MS
public server this time. It will have set up the News Account for you with
the minimum required settings; click Tools | Accounts... to add optional
settings, like Organization. Then click Newsgroups and Reset List to
subscribe to as many groups as you like.
Every ISP that I've dealt with includes a subscription to a news server that
you can use to access all the Usenet and other newsgroups, including some of
the MS groups. (My current ISP offers over 50,000 NGs!) That server is the
one that you should use to access all the alt.* and other NGs that you are
looking for. Your own ISP can tell you how to access their bundled news
server; the access procedure and service should be nearly identical between
Win9x/ME and WinXP, or between dial-up and broadband.
There are many free news servers that you can find by having Google search
for "free news server". And then there are news servers run by businesses
to serve their own customers, such as news.soundblaster.com. You'll have to
find these on your own if you have their products.
