Networking

I am trying to connect my new computer to my original via
a home network. The Network cards are OK and my cross
over cable is connected yet when I run the wizard it says
that no connection is there i.e the wire is not
connected. I have two cables both of which do not work. I
am a definite novice at this, can anyone help??
