I have bought a new system with XP installed. Started it up when I got
home. It runs to WinXP startup and quits with a blue screen saying in the
center

Out of Range
85Hz / 53KHz

Any ideas where I start to look for the probalem? I reloaded XP from CD.
No change.

Weird. Sounds like XP is not recognizing the refresh
rate of your monitor. Try a different monitor or video
card. Or, if video is built into the mainboard, it might
be a mainboard problem. You might call whoever
sold you the computer, and lay the problem on them.

Sound like a graphics setting problem, not an XP error. Your monitor is
probably reporting that it is being run out of range.

Start up in safe mode (press F8 repeatedly while Windows is booting; choose
regular Safe Mode). Go to the Display control panel, and set a safe
resolution and refresh rate. (640X480 at 60 Hz is always safe with CRT
monitors; I'm not familiar with LCDs; it seems like it could be a problem if
you're using a DVI interface. Few do, though.) Reboot into normal-mode
Windows, then change to more usable settings.

If Windows correctly identifies your monitor, it may be a good idea to have
the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" box checked (Display
control panel, Settings tab, Advanced button, Monitors tab).

HTH.
