My daughter has a Gateway 500MHz PIII PC and when she
upgraded from Windows 98 to XP, here sound card (Creative
SB Live) won't work. I stepped her through the removal
of all sound card drivers, then reboot with no luck. We
downloaded the patch at Creative promised to fix the
problem, but it didn't. Has anyone had a problem with
Creative's sound cards in xp?

XP included basic drivers for my version of SoundBlaster Live (Value),
although they were limited compared to the full ones.
Does the card show up at all in Device Manager?
Creative doesn't make a fully-blown install package for the Live available
for download. I believe that they'll sell you a new, XP-supporting version
of the driver and application CD for a fairly nominal charge. Or, a bit of
hunting around (Google, Google Groups) will reveal that some PC
manufacturers have the full package. (At HP's web site, for example, you
find the Compaq Softpaq SP21636. It installed on my homebuilt system, which
contains no Compaq components. The bad news is that it's nearly 160 MB. I
hope that you have broadband access.)
Good luck.
