View Full Version : lockup in xp

I don't know where to go from here.
I've isolated the problem using selective startup to a
single check mark the [mci] setting, when this is
selected and I run dxdiag or any games my system will
consistently lock up so that reset and holding the power
switch for 5 seconds will turn it off but the only way to
reboot is to disconnect power.
I have xp pro with all updates current and all drivers
are the latest available with whql certs.
I have tried newer video card drivers with no effect but
they were not whql for my card yet.
my system is

MB gigabyte ga 7n400-pro,chipset is nvidia nforce2-400
amd 2000xp cpu, 512 mb ddr ram(1 dimm)pc2700@333mhz

video card nvidia ti4200 4x agp (bios set for forced 4x
operation)

380W atx12v power supply , 30gb ide hdd
sata , raid , 1394 , serial and parallel are currently
all disabled.

observations:
1) the crash seems like it might be related to mciwave.dll
(or was it .exe?) buffer since the audio will run for 2-4
seconds before it hangs up.
2)when looking at mciwave. while the [mci] was
deselected I also had an error with rundll32(run dll
as.exe) when I searched for rundll32 I found a large
number of {rundll.exe-XXXXXX.pf} in a folder called
prefetch I don't know if thats normal or a symptom .

any assistance would be appreciated.
thank you
