View Full Version : - Win XP - 2 minute wait at desktop before I can do anything?!?

At 1st I thought it was a network card/drivers error (even though the
computer is NOT on any network) so I disabled the card. Then I thought it
was NAV2k3 so I completely uninstalled it. But the system still waits almost
2 mins before allowing me to do anything. It's almost like NAV is still
there loading up cause when the 2 mins is up, it (or something) scans the
floppy drive before allowing me to access anything. Now NAV is completely
uninstalled from the system and the network card is disabled but still the
wait?!?
The system was recently reloaded and worked fine for a few days with.
Nothing, that I know of, was added to the system. I don't know what happened
in the interim...
Oh...also...the system in question is 100% virus free as tested from MY
'clean room' system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Goto run and type in 'msconfig' look in there to see what is being run when
your computer boots. Could be loading lots of programs which you don't know
about and hence the 2 minute wait..

When you say "a 2 minute wait" are referring to the time it takes for
menues to open or before anything happens (opening a folder, for
example)? How about moving an icon? Or a right-click on the desktop?

Only thing I can do is move the mouse around or hit the start button once.
The start menu will appear once but nothing in the start menu will open
(other menu's, etc...). After I open it once (then if I L-click on desktop
to make the start menu go away) it won't come up again. Icons will not
select or move. Also once the 2 mins is up everything I did during the 2
mins happens like if I 2-click an icon, click on control panel in the start
menu, and then click on start 5 times all of that will happen once the 2
mins is up. Thanks for your reply...

Yes..just today I've noticed this on my machine.
my XP machine has a very slow "post boot" meaning, items in my system tray
(by the clock) like MSN Messenger, Norton, etc take an extra 1-2 minutes to
start. In the meantime, my system appears to work but you cannot reboot or
run most programs.
This seemed to happen after the most recent Windows Critical Update and a
recent Norton Internet Security Update but I am not sure if either are to
blame.
Let me know if you find out what it is..it could be Norton.

Yea, the fact that the floppy gets scanned after the 2 mins is up also
points to Norton. The bad part is that I have fully uninstalled NAV and I
STILL get the 2 min wait. After the 2 mins and the floppy scan no more icons
appear in the system tray so I haven't the foggiest idea what's happening
(if anything)...
