I thought "shell" was a screen saver, and I deleted it.
Now I learn that it is a vital interface. So many of my
programs aren't working now; I'm sick about it. I have
searched to see if I can "reinstall" SHELL, but I keep
getting links to CELL. I have a Presario 2700, Windows
XP. Please send help.

Thanks,
Judy H Jacobs

Hi, Judy.

Run the System File Checker. At the Run prompt, type: sfc /scannow

SFC will compare each Windows operating system file with the "known good"
copy held in your on-disk cache and replace any missing or damaged ones.

When I attempt to enter System File Checker under RUN,
Windows XP says no known files. When I put the same term
into search, I get the same response. Is there another
way to ask XP to find the on-disk cache?

Thanks,
Judy

Judy,

Exactly what file did you delete from your system? Do you remember the
exact name?

Hi, Judy.

Maybe I wasn't clear. You don't type "System File Checker" into the Run
box. Type just what I said before: SFC /scannow

Type just the initials SFC so that it can find and run the program file,
sfc.exe. Be sure there's a space between sfc and /scannow.

For detailed instructions, open the Help and Support File and type "sfc"
into the Search box.

Your on-disk cache should be in \Windows\System32\dllcache, but you don't
really need to know that. SFC will find it.

Just reinstall XP. As long as you do not make any major changes such as
formatting the hard drive or installing it on a different partition. Never
delete anything period on the first try. Try renaming it first and after a
few weeks delete it or save it to a backup disk. XP is not very forgiving
when you delete necessary files. I quit playing around with trying to
reduce space and just went out a got a new new BIG, BIG harddrive. The
prices are really great on big hard drives, especially when you wait for a
sale or rebate. To me anything less than a 100 GB plus is now considered a
small hard drive. Buying a 40 or 60, or even an 80 GB is not very cost
efficient. The 80 is boderline.
