The program is auto shop writer It is a dos program that
was last updated in 2000. It is the only dos program that
I need to run so I don't have another program to try. The
program runs fine on win me. thanks, george

Hello
Well your not running Win ME any more and XP does not like
DOS programs, so more than anything it may not work the way you
want it to. That is an option you over looked, when you decided
to upgrade. Links below talk about DOS apps in XP
Issue’s you have when trying to install MS-DOS Programs in XP

Don't know if this will help or not but you can try it. If you have a
shortcut to this program try the setup without opening the program below but
if you don't, right click on the left most icon on the Window bar at the top
of the DOS screen when the program is open. If you see the Properties
window open, left click on Layout. Change the Window width size to 80 and
the height to 25 and then click the Options tab and change the Display
options from Window to full screen. Click on Apply then OK.
Hope it works for you.

Hi, George.
Most DOS programs work just fine in WinXP. The ones that have troubles
usually are trying to directly manipulate the hardware (printers, monitor,
etc.), which Win9x/ME allowed, but WinXP does not allow. I'm still using a
few old DOS programs that are 20 years old. In fact, in many ways the
MS-DOS emulator built into WinXP is "a better DOS than DOS".
There are two approaches to getting an uncooperative program to run. One is
to adjust the settings of the "DOS" window. The other is to use the
Compatibility Mode. I don't have much experience with either, because my
DOS programs "just run", with no special treatment. ;<) Your fix may be as
simple as adjusting the shortcut that runs your program; set it to display
Full Screen instead of in a Window, for example. Right-click on your
Desktop shortcut, click Properties, and see how many options you have to
adjust the way that program runs in WinXP.
Tell us more about your program and who wrote it. Is it a commercial
product, or custom-written for you? I see in another post you said it is
"auto shop writer", but when I Google for that, I find dozens of programs
with similar-but-not-exact names. If you tell us exactly what the program
name is, we can probably find the website of the vendor and look there for
tips on how to run it under WinXP. In fact, since you already know the
name, you could do that yourself.
Post back and tell us what you try and how it works for you. In a
newsgroup, we all learn from each other. ;<)
