no response from Microphone

I active the Microphone setting in Window XP, and plug in
my Headset with mic also, but there is no response, then I
try the function called "audio testing wizard", the system
detected that there is no microphone setting on my laptop..

Did you troubleshoot this first??? Is it plugged into the correct
jack??? Does it work on another machine??? Does it have an
on/off button??? Is it muted in the volume control??? etc etc...
