View Full Version : Windowsxp home version vs professional

I haven't upgraded up to XP yet and am planning to upgrade my
Father-in-laws computer to XP. I can get either for the same price. Is
there any reason I "would not" want to get him the professional version?
He is only using it at home and is fairly a technical weenie.

Thanks,

Tom.

The two are identical except that Professional includes a few
features (mostly related to networking and security) missing
from Home. There's nothing in Home that's not in Professional.

I usually recommend Home for most home users, but in this case,
there's little reason not to get the more capable product. Even
if he doesn't need or use any of the extra features now, there's
always a possibility that he may want some of them in the future,
and at the price differential...

Tom,

Since dealer cost is almost $100 more for Pro than Home, I'd find another
source. If someone is offering both at the same cost, the likelihood that
they are counterfeit is very close to 100%!

Actually, I can get Pro at Student cost (they don't have a Home version)
of $100 or Home for $100 at a store ($200 for Pro - as you said a $100
difference).

Since my father-in-law is a bit of a novice, I just want to make sure I
am not adding anything complicated for him.

Thanks,

Tom.

Greetings --

You'd best go with the WinXp Home, then. You father, unless he's
a student or faculty member at an accredited school, won't be eligible
for the Academic license of WinXP Pro.

But I am. Is there anything different about the Academic version?

No, not at all, but there will be if you listen to the pillock Bruce!

Tom,

Legally, the EULA requires that the USER be "qualified" for the Academic
version, not the purchaser.

That's why you were told that your Father may not be legally eligible to use
the product on his own machine.

When you come here asking for advice, some of us will be telling you what
the legal thing to do is, but you make the ultimate decision on what you do!

Len,

I understand and agree and I have no problem with that.
