I have a problem with my Xp and the way files are
displayed in browser windows. Everything is automatically
sorted by date. Every folder! But this only happens in
browser view. Any other type of view its fine. I can
rearrange the icons any way i lyke. But when i go to
browser its automatically set to arrange icons by date.
Is there somethings really small that im overlooking???

The browse window...when you're in a program and...for
example you go to open a file....all the files are stuck
on arrange by date and this is very annoying because im
used to searching for files by name. I cant get it to go
back to arrange by name as the default.

I believe you mean in Windows Explorer.
You can change it to arrange by name but after you reboot it's changed
back??

From Ramesh MS MVP

[[The first thing to do is go to Control Panel>Folder Options and under the
View tab make sure that 'Remember each folder's view settings' is ticked.

However even with this setting ticked you'll wind up with unsaved settings.
The way to fix this problem is to open Regedit and go to the following
sub-folders:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\BagMRU]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\Bags]

Right-click on each one (i.e. BagMRU and Bags) and select Delete to get rid
of both of them.

Reboot your PC and set up each of your folders as you like it. These
settings should now be saved and restored on the next reboot. By deleting
the registry entries above Windows is forced to recreate them and in doing
so get rid of corruption and bad entries, typically caused by third-party
programs.

If the above does not help, proceed to 2.......

Method 2 : Courtesy: Kelly Theriot - MVP

Windows [XP] remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some
settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding
this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2):

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and
answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right
clicking on the file and selecting Edit.]]

Your view settings or customizations for a folder are lost or incorrect

This is an old Explorer.exe bug. The following article gives directions for
fixing. It is written for Win98 but works with WinXP as well.

Items in "Open" and "Save As" Dialog Boxes Sorted Incorrectly

I wasn't sure what they meant either, Wes. When the said "when you open a
file" in their follow-up post, it looked like that was what they were
referring to. :^)
