I am having the same problem with my Dad's Gateway
computer and XP. No one seems to know how to fix or why
it is happening. My Gateway computer had no problems
with the fix. If anyone figures it out I would
definately appreciate hearing about it. Please someone
pass the information along.

hey i did find some info about it from a yahoo group
he told me...

" believe the worm also attempts to perform a Denial
of Service (DoS) on Windows Update. According to
Symantec, this is an attempt to prevent you from
applying a patch on your computer against the DCOM RPC
vulnerability."

and then he went on to say install the worm tool by symantec!

but i still want to be sure you know
about the patch and to install the patch

Yes, I have a copy of the patch and i have the Symantec
Worm removal tool. I have used it on my Computer (also a
Gateway) and had no problems taking care of it. I also
used it on my 6 networked computers at my job and it had
no problems. When I attempted to use it on my fathers
Gateway computer the error message occured. Noone seems
to know what is up with it. If you find anything definte
out please let me know. I will do the same. Thanks for
your help.

a guy named Nicholas posted this...

here is what you have to do

Perform disk cleanup 1st..start to programs, to accessories, then to system
tools and then to DISK CLEANUP
then..

go to start then run and then type MSCONFIG
Select NORMAL SETUP....click apply and REBOOT!

Then :

Go to start, and then RUN
In the open box - type CMD and then click OK

At the command line - type these commands. after every command, press enter

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

Then type EXIT to close that screen. and then go ahead and install the
