View Full Version : Can't get this thing to load

I've been using 98SE for years. I have started to have the
old DHCP problem (freezes when trying to go on internet).
Therefore, I have cut off internet access by dumping the
lan card driver. I have now decided to go to XP home
upgrade. The setup process starts fine. When it asks if I
want the online upgrades, I have to check "continue to
load as is" because if I tell it to go online, the
computer will freeze!
Anyway, it gets to about 2/3 thru the check routine in the
blue setup screen. (all this time, the progress indicator
on the bottom right is moving and the paragraphs about XP
continue to change periodically (the mouse continues to
work, also), but the progress indicator stops and the
remaining time (79 minutes) stop also.
After about an hour of waiting for this to change, I press
Esc to get out of it. Then the program says it will
restore everything the way it was, then quit setup.
This has happened about 6 times with the end result - me
staying with a corrupted Win98 that I have to repair!
Does anyone have a clue what is causing this setup
stopping problem? (again, the computer doesn't freeze at
that time but the setup just stops - apparently)
I have had trouble with most MS products but never this
much.
Thanks for the help!
Ron

Greetings --

Before proceeding, you should ensure that all the PC's components
are capable of supporting WinXP. This information will be found at
each of the PC's component's manufacturer's web sites, and on
Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List:
(http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp). Computer components
designed for use with Win9x/Me very often fail to meet WinXP's much
more stringent hardware quality requirements. This is particularly
true of many models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line
or HP's consumer-class Pavilion product line.

Can you obtain WinXP-specific device drivers for your PC's
components, and any necessary motherboard BIOS updates? Additionally,
you can download and run Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you
have any incompatible hardware components or applications:

Since I have a Compaq Presario and had win98 installed previously, I can
suggest one thing. You must have Internet access for Microsoft to download
updates for your drivers while using the XP upgrade disk. If you solve your
win98 problem FIRST, (the Internet access), the installation should
hopefully proceed normally.
