No CD rom (??)

I see my cd-rom, it is physically there. However, it will
not read from the drive. I have run troubleshooters to no
avail. I have been told that the hadware problem could
stem from a copy of Office XP I was loaned. Office XP has
now been uninstalled but the problem remains.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone tell me how
to go about rectifying it?
