Have you been downloading music files from Kazzaa?
Morpheus? Most "free" music now contains another program.
You cant call it a virus since you are stealing music,
and saying yes to the download. This writes a program to
your hard drive (changes registry, cannot be removed or
recognized by anti virus software) that removes your CD
drive to prevent you from stealing music and writing it
to a CD.
This program has wreaked havoc on all 6 of my home
computers that are networked. I have 4 kids, and they
well, you know teenagers...... The only way I have
successfully gotten rid of this problem was to reformat
all hardrives. 4 of my machines have multiple hard
drives, so it was a few days work.
If you are not downlaoding music, it could just be a
defective hard drive. It is very much plug and play, just
remove the cover (unplug computer of course) remove the
screws on the side of the CD drive, remove the power and
strap plugs on the back, and slide it out the front of
the machine, slide a new one in it's place and reverse
the proccess. It should lod itself when you start
machine. If not use the disk. I reccomend you dont buy
the cheapest cd drive you can find as you will get what
you pay for.
Good luck,
Sean
