This is a clarification a prior post.

Issue: XP will NOT allow vendor driver replacement and
automatically substitutes MS driver.

Initial installation of Adaptec USBconnect 1420 worked
fine. Somewhere along the line, the the USBconnect stopped
working and NO action I take allows me to reinstall
adaptec driver. This includes disable, roll back, update,
or uninstall of MS driver, even when in Safe mode as
administrator. XP seems to either 1) be blind to "have
disk" information or 2) automatically does a "hardware
found" and reinstalls the MS drivers. Somehow, I once got
the adaptec driver installed properly, but when I plugged
a device into USB port, and error message indicated the MS
driver was being used. Whats up ??!!

It's the flawed XP hardware management system which, if it once gets the
wrong driver, must be sledgehammered to correct the error. It does not
forgive operator error, also.

You might find that this works. Connect the device, and from device
manager remove it, and if there is software, remove that from add/remove
programs. Expand device manager to view hidden devices and make sure
all are erradicated. Shut down. Disconnect the device. Reboot with
device *not* connected. Install the drivers and any software. Now
connect the device and see if XP will find and install the correct
driver.
