View Full Version : Add custom folder to right panel of Start Menu

Hi, I would like to add a custom folder on the right panel of the Start
Menu. I found the following registry hack:
<http://groups.google.ca/groups?q=g:thl1873424343d&dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=u7Ps7exvCHA.2668%40TK2MSFTNGP09&rnum=103>
Can someone tell me more about this hack? Is it safe? Does my link have
to masquerade as an ActiveX control? Do I need to generate a new GUID
for each custom link, or is this a Microsoft hard coded GUID, therefore
I can only add one custom folder? I don't see any reg entries pertaining
to Explorer, only "CLSID" entries, which leads me to believe it is a
hard-coded GUID that Windows searches for a startup, if found, it adds
the link to the Start Menu.
Is there some, more natural, way to do this?
Thanks

That one is the OEM link. Run can replace run, search, OEM, etc. They're =
all next to each other in the registry.

Thanks, I took a look at that method as well, but it seems to get really
ugly if you want to change the name of the link as well. For instance My
Pictures is referenced in many places not documented in the hacks I've
read on this approach. It doesn't seem safe to me.
This is definitely on my wish list for the next service pack.

Several options:
You can replace either My Pictures or My Music with a specialized folder of
your choice. It will behave as the above folders do as in cascading, etc.
Add Folder to Start Menu - Replace MP or MM (Line 2)

Or you can add a folder or link under Search and Run. Note: If you running
an OEM, it will replace their link.
Add a Folder Under the Run Command (Line 180)

And/or: Add a folder to My Computer, Desktop and Right Click (Start Button)
Add a Folder to My Computer and Desktop (Line 130)
Add a Folder to the Start Button - Right Click (Line 124)

Another option is adding a special folder to My Documents as a sub.
